Do Foods Cause Acne – Myth or Reality

Wednesday 31 March 2010 @ 9:12 pm

Acne is a skin ailment that is affecting a lot of people today, not only teenagers going through puberty and hormonal changes, but additionally adults. While it’s true that hormonal fluctuation in the body is the main cause of acne, diet also plays a part. Consuming the wrong kinds of food not only results to conditions such as obesity and diabetes, but additionally creates an imbalance in the body.

It would however, be a mistake to think that you can treat acne by simply cutting out acne causing foods; you need to take a holistic approach to take care of the condition. It is, however, the 1st step in the right way.

Foods that Cause Acne #1 : Junk Foods

Fatty foods create blood sugar instability by making the levels rush up and then plummet just as fast, leading to severe hormonal reactions and consequently, acne. Fatty foods also slow down the circulation of vitamins and minerals and oxygen to your body cells which usually worsens acne.

Refined carbohydrates and sugar are also causes. Generally, food that’s “white” has had all its nutrients stripped away and the body needs those vitamins and minerals to function and to give you a clear complexion. These types of foods also increase blood sugar as fatty foods do. Sugar worsens acne due to the fact there are harmful bacteria within the stomach live off of it and generate toxic materials. Sugar substitutes are even worse as they also include harmful compounds.

Processed foods are refined making digestion problematic, causing allergic reactions, inflammation and exasperating acne. Their additives, flavors, colors, and preservatives also make them contributors to acne.

Coffee, tea, chocolate, and also energy drinks give you which sometimes required energy increase but play havoc with your skin. Caffeine has been confirmed to be an acne trigger by making the adrenalin glands secretes hormones that give you the buzz. These hormones, essentially stress your body badly, affecting not only your skin but also your health. Caffeine also disturbs regular sleep patterns and stops the attainting of “deep sleep” during which the body engages in restoration and cleansing.

Foods that Cause Acne #2 : Natural Baddies

Not many people are aware that the human body is not designed to digest cow’s (or any other animals’) milk. Everyone is allergic to milk, however the difference lies as to whether the reaction is visible. The digestive system lacks the necessary enzymes to break down milk, and the immune system creates a response that can result in oxidative anxiety and inflammation, therefore acne.

Further more, homogenized, and pasteurized milk cover the lining of the small intestine with a mucous coat that prevents assimilation of much needed nutrients. Milk producing cows are also fed antibiotics and hormones to increase production and these harmful chemicals enter your system when you drink milk, or eat other dairy products like cheese, ice-cream which are also fatty.

Be wary of animal proteins that are very acidic and provide problems that allow development of acne causing bacteria. In addition, processed meat has sodium nitrite and sulfur that are all damaging to the body and over time impair your skin’s health.

Gradually cutting out or moderating these acne causing food is the first substantial step towards taking control of your health and helping your skin.

4 Most Common Acne Myths

Wednesday 31 March 2010 @ 1:15 pm

There are many myths surrounding acne that many of us believe to be true as these are things that are past down from generation to generation. The most common myths are also passed on to us from friends and family in an attempt to help us clear up our acne problem. The problem with these myths is not only being they are not true but some can actually cause more severe acne outbreaks. Let us take a look at the four most common acne myths.

1. The worst of all the myths, because it causes more severe breakouts, is a dirty face or, poor hygiene. Many believe that if you scrub your face frequently you can get the acne to clear up. They believe, in order to get the grime, oil, and dirt out, frequent hard scrubbing is necessary, but all that really does is force oil and dead skin into the pores clogging them more, that in turn does nothing more than cause more severe acne. Instead, what you should do is only wash infected areas twice a day, using only mild soaps, no abrasive cleansers. In addition, no washcloth or scrub pads use only the bare hand and fingertips, as cloths and scrub pads irritate and worsen acne.

2. You need to watch what you eat those french-fries and greasy fast food burgers will make you breakout, oh and the chocolate will too. Hate to burst your bubble but, there have been many studies conducted concerning acne and what causes it, and to this day, they cannot find a connection linking what we eat to acne. Therefore, what it comes down to is you can eat what ever you want however, eating healthy foods makes sense.

3. It is true that acne is not physically harmful and will not affect your health it only affects the way you look. The implications of severe acne however, can be emotionally devastating and can last a lifetime. In addition, severe cases of acne can leave permanent scarring on the face, which adds to the emotional distress many suffer. The myth that acne is no big deal is very false; a severe case of acne can scar a person both physically in the form of scars and emotionally, both of which can last a lifetime.

4. This is another myth that can be harmful, doing nothing because acne is not curable, all you can do is leave it alone to run its course, and eventually it will go away. Unfortunately this is partially true, in that by the time you reach twenty-five years old it most likely will have gone away but, not without turning into a severe case causing scarring. If you see a dermatologist, they can get you started on treatment that can clear up mild cases in as little as three days and moderate to severe, as mentioned earlier, in six to eight weeks. Leaving it alone will only make it worse before it gets better.
